Mogara - new project setup flow
Designing a new project onboarding flow for a SAAS startup.
Mogara is a YCombinator (‘23) backed SAAS startup that provides a platform for accounting and engineering teams to streamline reporting software research and development costs.
My first objective was to design a step-by-step onboarding flow for users to set up a new project.

THE OBJECTIVE
An easy setup that demonstrates value and facilitates completion
Starting in 2023, the IRS requires companies to capitalize software costs for tax benefits. Mogara automates this process. As a new product that solves a new problem, we had a few objectives we wanted to accomplish during the onboarding and project setup phase:
01 Signal the value prop to new users: As a new product, it was important for us to demonstrate the usefulness and ease of Mogara’s setup process.
02 Reduce user drop off: With any setup or onboarding flow, our biggest challenge was to prevent users from dropping off of the experience before completion.
03 Collect necessary inputs: Mogara’s proprietary tech requires a few necessary user inputs to allow their automated reporting to start working. Asking users to fill out information always creates friction and we wanted to make this as seamless as possible.
How might we make users feel confident and not overwhelmed in the setup process?
RESEARCH, TESTING & WIREFRAMING
10 user interviews to determine sufficient inputs, 4 teams tested to ensure a seamless flow
We conducted 10 user interviews with accounting and engineering team leaders to understand their current processes. After conducting our interviews, I worked with the founders to determine the sufficient list of questions and started mocking up the flow.
Over the course of a week, we tested the low-fi wireframes with 4 prospective accounting teams. Through these tests we identified 3 important learnings to incorporate into the final designs:
01 1 question per page to prevent cognitive overload
02 Lowest barrier to entry questions first
03 A step progress tracker to signal how easy setup is
